Brief Clan History

Tracing a descent back to the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, this great clan of the Scottish Borders achieved a glittering array of noble titles and honours in the service of its nation over the centuries.

Stalwart defenders of Scotlands freedom, the clan was also frequently embroiled in bitter and bloody feuds with rival Border clans.

This old family, said to be of Norman descent, are recorded in the Borders in the 12th century. The two main families were the Kerrs of Cessford, now represented by the Duke of Roxburghe, and the Kerrs of Ferniehurst, represented by the Marquis of Lothian, Sir Andrew Kerr of Ferniehurst was Warden of the Middle Marches in 1502, and when his castle was besieged by the English he defended it so ferociously that the besiegers alleged he was helped by the devil.

Robert Kerr, Earl of Lothian and Ancrum, was created Marquis of Lothian in 1701. There were other important branches of this family, including Fawdonsyde and Cavers-Carre.

How to wash

In the first instance we recommend dry cleaning all wool products.

If you wish wash by hand or by machine please do not wring the item, or allow the item to float free in a washing machine. when using a machine always place your product in a pillow case so that it does not tangle or loose its shape.

By hand wash gently using luke warm water and when drying taking great care to ensure that the item is placed flat on a towel for it to dry. This way the product will keep its shape and its softness, and look as new as when first bought.
Always use a recommended wool detergent ie Woolite.
